Edo House sacks council committees

Edo state House of Assembly has dissolved the 18 local government transition committees with immediate effect.

This was sequel to reports that the 18 local council chairmen
had concluded plans to travel to Canada for a seminar.

Paul Ohonbamun representing Egor constituency who moved the motion for the dissolution of the Committees under matters of urgent public matters, said the dissolution was long overdue.

Seconding the motion, Minority leader of the House, Emmanuel Okoduwa representing Esan North-East II constituency, said the dissolution of the council would give room for democracy at the grassroots to thrive.

Majority leader of the House, Philip Shaibu representing Etsako West constituency, while also calling for their removal, however praised their contribution toward the development of their respective local government areas.

Others who also contributed to the motion, Foly Ogedegbe representing Owan East constituency and Kingsley Ehigiamusoe representing Igueben constituency, all called for the dissolution of the transitional local council chairmen to enable the constitution of democratically elected chairmen by the state electoral commission.

Speaker of the House, Uyigue Igbe directed the transitional committee chairmen to hand over all properties of their respective councils to the Heads of Service with immediate effect.
