IS bombing kills 91 people in Baghdad

Two separate bomb attacks blasted the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 91 people - 86 in one attack - and wounding 186, Iraq officials said. The deadlist attack hit the busy shopping district of Karrada, killing 86 and wounding up to 170, according to police and city officials. Firefighters were working to extinguish blazes and rescue trapped people from the charred sites.

In the second bombing in eastern Baghdad, an improvised explosive device went off killing 5 people and wounding 16.

The Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, claimed responsibility for the Karrada attack in a statement posted on social media, saying they deliberately targeted Shiite Muslims. No group claimed responsibility for the eastern Baghdad attack.

The attacks come days after U.S.-led airstrikes on the Islamic State killed at least 250 suspected militants and destroyed at least 40 vehicles in Fallujah last week. ISIL has lost about 45% of the territory it controlled at its peak last year in Iraq and about 20% of what it once occupied in Syria, the Pentagon said.

Earlier this year, ISIL claimed responsibility for a car bomb that killed and injured scores of people in Baghdad when an IS-affiliated suicide bomber struck mourners in a crowded funeral reception hall, killing up to 40 people and wounding dozens.

The militants are estimated to control only 14% of Iraqi territory, according to the office of Iraq’s prime minister.
