Rio Olympics: Mikel leaves Chelsea to join Nigeria U-23 team

The Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has left the London club to join Nigeria’s Olympic team at their training camp in Atlanta Georgia, United States of America.
The Nigeria senior team captain took to his official Instagram page (@John_mikel_obi) to make the announcement. Mikel posted a picture of a training session with Chelsea with the caption: “First part of Chelsea preseason done. Off to Atlanta to join the Nigeria team for the Olympics 2016.”

According to an official in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) who chose to remain anonymous, John Mikel Obi and four other top players joined the Nigeria U-23 team at their Atlanta camp.

The other players are William Troost-Ekong, Kingsley Madu, Oghenekaro Etebo and Daniel Akpeyi. Mikel and the other players are in line to feature in the team’s final warm-up match against Rio-bound Honduras on Tuesday, July 26. 

The official said: “Mikel and the other players have confirmed their arrival. “Their arrival will most certainly boost team morale.” 

Mikel and Akpeyi are the two over-aged players Coach Samson Siasia will parade in Rio next month, while Norway-based Troost-Ekong and Madu have been capped at full international level and will now make their debut for the Olympic team. 

Nigeria’s Dream Team VI will play in Group B at the Rio 2016 Olympics alongside Sweden, Colombia and Japan. They kick-start their campaign at the Olympics with a clash against Japan on August 5.
